I am dissapointed that you and other people drive around with that much weight on a trailer without trailer brakes. Not only is this illegal (in many states) it also puts other motorists at risk from getting rear ended or T-boned as you slide through an intersection.

I haven't tried the Redline Diesel stuff, but their "MTL" worked wonders in the transmission of my Nissan truck.

Hmm... $2600/750 hours = $3.50 per hour. If someone would give me a tractor for $3.50 per hour, I wouldn't bother buying one. Go with the new tractor. $2600 is worth the warranty alone. The previous owner could have done some serious, albeit not so obvious abuse in that time.

There is no equivalents to the 21 and 35. They are both purpose built, heavy duty machines designed to run a backhoe every day. You could put a backhoe on a JD and it would probably be fine, but if you use it constantly, it probably won't hold up like the Kubotas. However, the JD will do the other chores better. Buy a nice 30hp, 4wd compact and a used case 580 and you will have the best of both worlds.

It may not be worth buying. Just think how many different abusive operaters that tractor has had over it lifetime. It's like buying a rental car that has 50,000 miles on it - not a chance.

I just re-read the original post. Your 790 would be useless against 8 to 10" trees (as would most compacts or even large tractors). Hire someone with an excavator.

I will be doing some seeding next weekend of some bare areas in my fields. The soil is red clay and very smooth. I want to roughen the soil slightly, throw some seed and cover it with hay. I'm not trying to make a golf course... I'm thinking a landscape rake may do the trick. Any thoughts?

You get what you pay for with Howse brush cutters. 2" material will destroy it. My friend bought one and the deck was totally bent up after hitting a rock. Pay about $750 and get a Bushog SQ model - at a minimum. It will do 2" material without much damage, but doesn't sound too good in the process.

Don't count on an Engineer's liability insurance to cover anything. Unless he is standing there the entire time the repair is made (which is expensive), any future failure would likely be a case of finger pointing at best. By the time it is sorted out, you would spend more on the lawyers than on repairing it. I own a private strucutral engineering practice and can tell you from experience, getting an engineer to cough up any dough is tough. I still recommend getting an engineer to give his opinion, but don't count on him being an insurance policy - just maybe some peace of mind knowing you are on the right track.

If you want a tractor to last a long time and withstand abuse, you should look for tractor models that have been in production for a long time. Also find a tractor that doesn't have a bunch of electronic gimmicks. I would probably be leaning towards Kubota.

Yes, the specs for the 790 indicate the 3 pt hitch lift is in the 850lb range - not KG. I beleive the 870 is a larger tractor - hence the additional lift capacity. The 790 numbers seems low, but I have one and it hasn't been a problem - yet. I have a 550lb bushog and it lifts that and a 160lb person satnding on the tailwheel - no problem. If you do the statics, this is a little more than 850lbs at 24" behind the lift arms - maybe I'll try 2 people next time

Hmm.. all those new gimicky features on the XX10 series just seem like warranty claims waiting to happen. You would think with all of the problems they have had with these tractors, they would try to simplify them, not make them more complicated. Now the dealers are probably going to have to buy a bunch of sophisticated equipment just to troubleshoot them.

I have never heaerd of a tractor stalling due to excessive weight in front end loader. I would assume the relief valve would blow way before this happens. Also, it seems unusual that a bucket full of pallet boards would be heavy enough to be a problem - regardless of your bucket size. I would have it checked out.

It's ironic the axle bearings on a 4200 would have problems. The front and rear end on these tractors seem huge for their weight and horsepower. My 790 front and rear end look like toothpicks in comparison.

It is interesting that you called it a PTO "break" as that is exactly what it will do sometime in the future. I believe only modern tractors without live PTO's have the overrunning clutch. On my 790, if I cut the engine while in gear, clutch out, the PTO engaged and the bushog spinning, the bushog will push the tractor. As such, I doubt I have an overrunning clutch, but I do have live PTO.

I rarely opearate my 790 over 2000 rpms - even when bushogging. The lower engine speed makes it quieter and easier to operate. I imagine if I was looking for a better cut when using a finshing mower or looking to speed up loader ops, I would be up at PTO speed.

You will be much happier with the 4wd 790 over a 2WD 3010. The extra traction of 4wd cannot be compensated for by adding the rear weights. I have a 790 and it a proven, solid tractor made by Yanmar. It is also smaller and more maneuverable than the 3010. What about a 4WD 3000 as a compromise?

A friend of mine recently purchased a TC40D w/ supersteer. It appears that to maintain clearance for the pivoting front axle, a different loader is used on this tractor (17LA VS 16LA I think) The loaders appears to stick out significantly farther in front of the tractor than normal which probably lowers its lift capacity and makes the tractor very bouncy with a load in the bucket.I also noticed the turn right, loader goes left phenomenon that was mentioned. I do alot of maneuvering thru the woods between trees on my 790 and i'm curious if the supersteer with a loader would actually be beneficial or cause problems. It seems to me that a tractor with a longer wheelbase, a loader that sticks out farther and the turn right, go left thing would be a problem in tight spaces. Any thoughts?
